Deceitful Above All Things

The Pope has taken some flack recently for saying that people are basically good.

Pope Francis was interviewed by 60 Minutes. He was asked what gives him hope when he looks around the world today. His answer was to cite the good things that people do, and our desire to live life and get ahead:

«You see tragedies, but you also see so many beautiful things. You see heroic mothers, heroic men, men who have hopes and dreams, women who look to the future. That gives me a lot of hope. People want to live. People forge ahead. And people are fundamentally good. We are all fundamentally good. Yes, there are some rogues and sinners, but the heart itself is good.»

I would have thought that the so-called Vicar of Christ might have put his hope for humanity in, I don't know, Christ.

The Bible sure doesn't think that people are basically good, not since the fall into sin, anyway. No one is righteous, no not one (Romans 3:9 ff). We were sinful from the time of our conception (Psalm 51:5), dead in our trespasses (Ephesians 2:1-3). We are inclined toward evil and away from good (Genesis 8:21). The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it? (Jeremiah 17:9).

But what else should you expect from the antichrist Pope?
