Smart Notes
Projects
Tasks
----------
When you are stuck on a task, change tasks. Do something else. Break the large task of writing a paper into smaller component tasks, just like with any other project. You won't have to hold the entire sturcture of the project in your mind all at one time, and you will be able to complete the individual tasks systematically.

Plans
Structures
----------
Ahrens says that making plans and having a structure in which to work are different. How? Ahrens says that to make a plan is to impose a structure on yourself rather than to work "in" a sturcture. How are those things different?

Planning
Learning
----------
Planning will help a student get through exams, but it will not help them continue on with learning. They must "learn how to learn."

Planning
Experts
Learning
----------
Students who are planners tend not to continue studying after their exams are over. Experts voluntarily continue learning because their experience has been fun and rewarding, and their continued learning generates new insights and ideas. [What are the defining characteristics of a "planner" and and "expert?"]

Dunning-Krueger Effect
Planning
Experts
----------
Poor students often feel more successful, at least until they are tested, becuase they experience little self-doubt. They don't know what they don't know. Those who are bad at a given task, and are not seeking new learning to improve, are usually over-confident. Those on their way to expertise, however, know that there is more for them to learn. They know what they don't know. This person tends to underestimate his abilities. The confident fool and the experienced practitioner will often sound alike, at least for a while.

Imposter Syndrome
----------
High achievers, those on their way to becoming experts, often focus on their deficiencies. Because they tend to focus on what they have not yet mastered, high achievers often suffer from imposter syndrome, that is, they believe that their successes are the result of chance. They fear that next time they will not be able to perform and will be "found out."

22 Smart Notes
----------
Keep things simple. When utilizing smart notes, there are two principles to remember: 1) implement the slip box, and 2) change your working routine to use smart notes.

Getting Things Done
Overarching Workflow
----------
Ahrens praises the concept of "overarching workflow" from David Allen's book, "Getting Things Done." What is this concept, and how does it relate to writing?

Smart Notes
Slip Box
Data Collection
----------
Collect all the material that needs to be dealt with in one place and process it in a standardized way. This is how the structure of Smart Notes helps. All the material that one reads is distilled into notes. These notes are then processed and stored using the slip box.

Writing
----------
The smart note system is a comprehensive note-taking system that lends itself well to the open-ended process of writing.

Luhrmann
----------
In the 1960's in Germany, Niklas Luhrmann invented the slip-box to organize his notes and ideas. Luhrmann was the son of a brewer. He had no formal academic training. Yet, his slip-box note-taking system helped him enter the world of academia, become a professor of sociology, and publish scores of books that approached the subject matter in unique and innovative ways.

Slip Box
Luhrmann
----------
They system Luhrmann developed was simple. It consisted of notes written on slips of paper. Each slip of paper contained one note or idea. Luhrmann numbered each slip sequentially, and collected them in the slip box (or, in German, "Zettelkasten").

28
Smart Notes
Slip Box
----------
In actuality, the smart note system requires two slip boxes. One is for bibliographic notes, and the other is for ideas in response to what is read.

29
Slip Box
Smart Notes
----------
The basic idea behind smart-noting is this: You read something, write a brief note with bibliographic information attached, and file it in the bibliographic slip box. Ahrens calls this type of note a "Literature note."

Permanent Note
Slip Box
----------
Come back later and think on the brief note relative to your own writing and ideas. Write out your own thoughts and comments on a new piece of paper, one idea per slip. Write as though you were writing for the final draft of the paper.

Smart Notes
Data Collection
----------
Don't simply copy quotations from the text. Translate ideas from the text into your own words. [This is what will help you learn. It will also help you process the information in new ways, and possibly make new connections to other data.]

Smart Notes
Data Collection
Slip Box
----------
Each note card (slip) should be numbered sequentially. When adding new notes into the box, check for other notes which may have relevant connections to previously filed notes. You can either place the new note directly behind the one to which it relates, if there is one, or simply number it and add a "link" to the note you wish to connect.
